Earthenware dish with lustrous enamels; 16th century Italian majolica

Earthenware dish covered with metallic enamels. Decorated with a cherub carrying a spear, tambourine, and basket of fruit, painted in underglaze blue and red and yellow enamels. The firing process created shades of green, gold, pink, and brown; the resulting effect is superb, with sublime lustrous colors. Although a perfect restoration would have enhanced it, we preferred to present this dish as is so that collectors can clearly see all the imperfections.
