Very large bronze Màravijayà Buddha (1.10m). LAN NA style, Northern Thailand, 17th or 18th c.
Sàkyamuni, seated under the bodhi tree, endures the assaults of Màra, the regent, fearful of losing his ascendancy over beings dominated by passions. The regent first sent his armies to him, but to in vain. The master then touched the earth (the gesture of the Bhumisparsa mùdra) to prove his unwavering determination and called the earth-goddess Sthàvarà as his witness.
LAN NA style, inspired by Pala art, Bagan, Haripunchai and Lanka, with Chiang Mai as its capital since the end of the 13th century.
A very fine piece, rare in its size. Formerly entirely gilded with leaf, traces of which can be found everywhere.
Weight probably between 150 and 180kgs
