Napoleon III pair of andirons in patinated bronze

An important patinated bronze pair of firedogs andirons in Renaissance taste decorated with an alternation of flowery vases, topped by winged Cupids. The bottom part of the firedogs is chiselled with interlaced dragons and fantastic masks.
A landier is a large iron andirons used from the Middle Ages onwards, with a receptacle at the top for burning coals, hence the name landier. These large iron andirons, used in monumental fireplaces, were of various types: bucket landiers for heating dishes, and hook landiers. They were also used to hold the washing tub. From the 18th century onwards, the landier became a decorative chenet, which can be found today in ornamental fireplaces, like our landiers shown here.
