17th & 18th centuries Furniture and Statuary
A moving sculpture symbolizing the baptism of Christ in wood carved in the round and polychrome, dating from the 18th century.
Jesus, in the attitude of prayer, receives the baptismal water poured on his head by John the Baptist.
The dove of the Holy Spirit hovers above Christ, and cherubs sent from heaven participate in the solemnity of the moment.
The scene takes place on the banks of the Jordan River, whose wake the sculptor has skillfully stylized between the two characters.
Note the expression of the faces full of meditation and the quality of the fluidity of the drapes.
