Biography: Jean-Jacques Pradier, better known as James Pradier (1790-1852) was a sculptor and painter from Geneva who made a career in France. In 1807 he started in Paris under François-Frédéric Lemot and later was admitted to his studio at the School of Fine Arts in Paris, as well as to the studios of painters Charles Meynier and François Gerard.
Pradier mixed both an ancient art and an art inspired by nature in his works. The latter was strongly marked by his stay in Rome and was inspired throughout his life by themes inspired by mythology and ancient stories, but with an emphasis on figures (the main theme of his work). He represented his characters with ancient attributes and clothing. However, his works were also characterized by several romantic undertones.
his work was always characterized by a strong naturalism and a certain sensualism.
