Imposing stone sculpture with traces of polychromy representing a female figure. French school of the 16th century, follower of Germain Pilon.
The subject represented in the figure of Madeleine can be identified from the iconography prior to the conversion: a richly dressed woman, wrapped in a large tunic with embroidered edges, her hair adorned with jewels from which two long wavy locks spring.
The refinement, grace and elegance of this sculpture bring it closer to Mannerism and to one of the French sculptors who was its protagonist, Germain Pilon (1525-1590). An example in particular is the Santa Barbara attributed to Pilon and exhibited at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City.
Our sculpture is made of stone, with traces of polychromy of which the yellowish white background still remains.
