Exceptional Boulle marquetry cabinet bearing the signature "Susse Frères", Paris, Napoleon III period, circa 1870.
This rare jewel belongs to the luxurious production of the brothers Victor and Amedée Susse: very rich "Boulle" type ornamentation on three sides with inlays of red tortoiseshell, brass, and ebony reproducing motifs of arabesques, acanthus and palmettes from the decorative repertoire of 17th century ornamentalists, such as Jean Bérain (1638-1711).
A small gilt bronze key opens it, revealing an interior organized into small drawers themselves inlaid with red tortoiseshell and bone fillets. It rests on four feet in the shape of anthropomorphic caryatids in chased and gilded bronze, just like the magnificent handle, representing a coiled snake. The signature "Susse Frères" is engraved on the lock.

Biography
Confirming their success during the famous Expositions des Produits de l’Industrie in Paris, the Susse Brothers, Victor (1806-1860) and Amédée (1808-1880) were listed as early as 1841 as manufacturers of “Art bronzes for clocks, candelabras, vases, statuettes, etc.”. Based at Place de la Bourse in Paris, they also displayed on the first floor of their luxurious store “cabinetwork, mounted porcelain and objets d’art.” A world-renowned foundry, Maison Susse began producing bronzes in the first half of the 19th century. The greatest French sculptors entrusted them with their sculpted works to be cast in bronze, such as Pradier who signed the oldest known publishing contract in 1841. After the death of the two brothers, Albert Susse succeeded them as director of the firm from 1880 to 1922.
