The Icon of the All-Holy Mother of God From the Sign of Kursk
with the nickname from the root.
When the region and the city of Kursk were almost completely destroyed by the Mongols in the 12th century, a God-fearing hunter found an icon lying upside down on a tree stump while hunting. At the place where he found the icon, the hunter and his companions built a wooden chapel and kept the icon in it.
Since that time, the icon has protected the Kursk region and performed many miracles and repelled enemies for centuries.
The Tsarina Irina Feodorovna decorated the icon in the 16th century with a rich gold-plated and silver-plated oklad, after which most icons of the Mother of God from Kurskaya were also provided with a high-quality and magnificent oklad.
The icon follows the representation of the Mother of God of the Sign (Znanemie) with Christ Emmanuel, around her prophets are depicted as follows.
Left from top to bottom: King David, Moses, Isaiah and Zechariah
Above middle part: God the Father, below holy Awakim
Right from top to bottom: King Solomon, Daniel, Jeremiah and Elijah
Assignment:
The icon bears the following silver hallmarks at the bottom of the edge, and on the left is the mark of the Moscow inspection administration with the initials of inspection inspector Ivan Sergeevich Lebedkin 1896 - 1908.
On the right the master stamp with the initials S. K. Z.
