French furniture of the 18th century & French figurative paintings
Dimensions : Width 37.5 cm - Height 59cm.
This superb pair of sconces, made in "Ile de France" around 1750, is a large three-light model, emblematic of the "Rocaille", the fullness of the French Louis XV period. Made of finely chased bronze and gilded with mercury, these sconces feature rich ornamentation based on plant motifs, dominated by asymmetry and luxuriance. The exuberance of the scrolls is perfectly controlled, however, to ensure that the balance of lines is respected: French classicism remains the rule in this period of restless curves, and separates this type of aesthetically perfect object from the more unbridled Rococo creations of the Italian or German Baroque.
These sconces have not been drilled for the passage of electricity. It is possible to electrify them without drilling, but this work is not included in the price.
They have, however, been drilled at the top and bottom for hanging, as can be seen in the photos. It is possible to fill these holes with cold paste, to avoid damaging the gilding.
