According to legend, an icon of the Mother of God shone with unearthly splendor near the Russian city of Tikhvin in 1383. A church with the title “Assumption of the Mother of God” was built on this site. When, during the Swedish invasion at the beginning of the 17th century, the population made a pilgrimage to this miraculous image of the city for protection and the besiegers were unable to conquer the city, this rescue was attributed to the intervention of Tikhvinskaya. In 1617 peace was made with the Swedes. Since this time, great veneration of the cult image began, which was not only limited to the Tikhvin area, but spread throughout Russia. Since the peace treaty of 1617, this representation has become one of the most popular icon motifs of the Mother of God in Russia.
