Rare black and red lacquer box inlaid with mother-of-pearl, bamboo basketwork sides. Interesting and rare Chinese work from the late Ming period. The basketry work is of exceptionally beautiful quality, the bamboo fibers are very fine and perfectly braided. The mother-of-pearl applications are of excellent quality and very thin in thickness, becoming translucent. The interior is lacquered red as are part of the sides. Many mother-of-pearl inlays are missing as can be seen in the photos. Some mother-of-pearl tiles will be replaced otherwise no restoration or hidden defect. Note the delicacy of the nested circle decoration on the beam which is a miracle. The fragility of this type of work with delicate materials "basketwork and mother-of-pearl in strips" means that most of this type of object has now disappeared.
Ming period. 16th century.
Dimensions approximately 20x24 cm.
