Little gem. Follower of Aelbrecht Bouts. Devotional panel for private use (‘Andachtsbild’) as was initiated in the 15th century by masters as Hans Memling, Van der Goes, Van Eyck and Dieric Bouts and continued in the 16th century by Aelbrecht Bouts, Joost van Cleve and other Flemish masters due to the success of these paintings with the upcoming middle class ‘nouveaux riches’. It dates from the 16th century. Both Mother and Child have that beautiful loving expression in the eyes and that mix of blissfulness, and freshness. Hair, eyes and hands are delicately detailed. Subtle gold lining on the border of the veil of Mary. Nicely crackled all over and amazing deep dark red /purple background that was probably painted on underlying layer of gold. Oil on oak. Panel and frame in one and the same piece of oak. One vertical crack in the lower right part. Old retouching but overall in good condition. Dimensions: 35x25cm. With Italian export license.
