An antique shamans amulet from the Inuit people. Carved in marine ivory (walrus tooth). Estimated age: 16th-17th century. “These carved figures could stand in for people absent from the village during ceremonies, could avert infertility or attract the attention of the animal spirit (inua) during the Doll festival” (Fitzhugh & Kaplan in ‘Inua: Spirit World of the Bering Sea Eskimo’, 1982, p156, fig. 190). Creamy patination. Feet missing but the dolls in the aforementioned publication ‘Inua’ in fig. 190 also have missing feet.

Accompanied by a certificate from Mr. Jo de Buck, expert at the Brussels court of justice.
