Stained glass fragment (France, ca 1600)

Head of a man with winged headgear. Possibly a renaissance depiction of Mercury, Roman god of commerce, speed and mediator between gods and humans. The winged helmet is one of his attributes. But he was also god of cheats and thieves and judging by that grin on his face his is definitely up to something naughty! Oxidized but unbroken. Dimensions: 10x12cm
