Three stained glass panels of 16th century Northern European mercenaries also known as ‘Landsknecht’, waving impressive flags in a rural Renaissance setting. These mercenaries wore rather extravagant uniforms and were especially popular in Switzerland (the ‘Swiss’ guard of the Vatican and their uniform is inspired by these Renaissance mercenaries and their outfit). Between the beginning of the 16th and 17th century, they were frequently depicted on stained glass either as a portrait or as part of a Swiss ‘Standesscheibe’ (or "cantonal pane", a stained glass that presents the coat of arms of a canton of the Old Swiss Confederacy).
Grisaille and silver stain. Excellent condition. Each of the three panels approximately: 10,5 x 15,5cm. New leads. With custom made lightbox.
Exhibited in the exhibition 'Grisaille Vertigo' (14 May - 1 July 2023) Galerie Jocelyn Wolff (43 rue de la Commune de Paris, 93230 Romainville, France).
