Offered by Galerie Saint Martin
On the canvas with the flower bouquet the artist affixes his monogram,
L. P. on a glass of water.
On the reverse of the stretcher is the inscription: citoyenne PEIGNE L'an 7 exposition de 1799 n°250 sous le nom de citoyenne Peigné, two small paintings of flowers and fruit.
The 1799 booklet states that citoyenne Peigné was a pupil of CHARDIN and Van SPAENDANCK, living in Versailles.
Little is known about Madame Peigné, née Jouanon. She was active between 1780 and 1820 as a still-life painter, watercolorist and draughtswoman, watercolorist and draughtswoman. She married an Indian in Versailles in 1786.
Her works can be found in the great Salons of the period ; like our own. It's probably thanks to her husband, close to the director of the Oberkampf factory in Jouy, near Versailles, that she became a designer for Jouy canvases, very popular at the time.
