On a base made of a Rocaille decoration is placed the terrace of the writing desk representing a rough sea with its waves in which two tritons blow in conches, in the center a winged naiad supports a large shell.
We will notice details such as the reeds, a dolphin swimming among the newts, the very worked edge of the large shell, the backwash of the waves...
On the other hand, the sculptor has represented emerging from the water the "very human" buttocks of newts while they have fishtails, this denotes a freedom and a slight audacity which would have usually disappeared in the 19th century.
The valves of the inkwell are treated like a pile of shells.
The proportions of this writing desk are also reminiscent of a basin, there is also a rim with a frieze of very architectural gadroons, one will imagine the basins of Versailles, with the mythological sea creatures of the God Poseidon.
It is almost organized like a boat, especially given the extreme discretion of the bucket valves.
It is a particularly rare object, we have not seen any similar work from the time of Louis XV, and there is no model in Louis XV style even approaching made in the 19th century.
It is therefore and probably an order made at the beginning of the 19th century in reference to the basins of Versailles.
