Byzantine icon Crucifixion of Christ, Crete around 1500.
Tempera on levka on a massive olive wood board.
Below the cross are Mary Magdalene and three women on the left, and the disciple John and Captain Login on the right. The walls of Jerusalem form the background.
According to ancient legends, Christ was crucified on Golgotha in the place where Adam was buried, so Christ's blood stained his bones. Theologically, this means salvation.
The Greek abbreviations of Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews are recorded in the horizontal crossbar.

The Byzantine icon presented is from the hand of an iconographer of around 1500. The icon is in its original state of conservation, the corners have red retouching.
