As early as in their lifetime, the two greatest minds of the Age of Enlightenment were represented as pendants, in bronze, alabaster and biscuit porcelain.
The two philosophers, who did not like each other, appear to us here in all simplicity, wearing their indoor clothes and no wig. Their busts are removable and rest on gadrooned pedestals with a square base. Unusually, the feet are surmounted by large cylinders which fit neatly inside the hollow effigies.
The models of our busts are traditionally attributed in Belgium to the Tournai factory. We also find the same type of mounting on other Tournai pieces, such as the bust of Monseigneur d'Oultremont, Prince-Bishop of Liège (see photo). Cyrille Froissart nevertheless showed in 2005 that the Orleans factory had produced busts of Voltaire and Rousseau 'on fluted foot' and 'gadrooned foot'.
Whatever their provenance, our busts are moving portraits of two great Frenchmen.
Excellent condition; minor fire cracks; tiny chips to the flower under Rousseau's left shoulder and to the flower on the back of Voltaire.
