17th & 18th centuries Furniture and Statuary
French school for this very pretty pietà or ''Virgin of Mercy'' in polychrome carved wood from the beginning of the 17th century.
Marie is dressed in a loose embroidered coat and a dress with a rounded neckline and fitted at the waist, the subtle ''V'' pleats of which fall to the ground.
A wide veil wraps her face slightly bent in an attitude of contemplation whose expression is imbued with deep serenity.
Christ, wearing long wavy hair, is dressed in a perizonium course.
Her very fluid body rests on the Virgin's knees, the line of her body adapting harmoniously to that of her mother.
His right arm falls naturally to the ground in total and confident abandon, while his left hand seems to be holding Marie's coat.
An emotion of appeasement emerges and tenderly illuminates this statuary group.
