Pietà in walnut from the 17th century

Virgin of Mercy or Pietà in walnut carved in the round in monoxyl from the 17th century.
Marie is wearing a veil and wears a loose dress which falls in cascades of moving folds to the ground.
The features of his face, leaning slightly towards his son, are expressed in an attitude of meditation imbued with gentleness. His right hand delicately supports Christ's head.
This one is wearing long wavy hair and simply dressed in a perizonium course.
His very fluid body rests on the Virgin's knees, the line of his body adapting harmoniously to that of his mother. His right arm naturally falls to the ground in total and confident abandon.
A feeling of calm emerges and tenderly illuminates this touching sculpture.
The iconographic theme of the Pietà appeared in the 14th century in Germanic countries and more specifically within female monasteries where the suffering Christ and his mother, the Virgin of Mercy, were venerated. It subsequently spread throughout Europe, becoming one of the great subjects of European sculpture from the 15th century.
