European Works of Art from the Middle Ages to the XVIIIth century
A superb small drawing depicting the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, although it could also be a secular study of a person tied to a tree, having just been tortured or executed.
On a small sheet (105 x 55 mm), the artist demonstrates great mastery of the pen, with firm, error-free strokes on the outlines of the figure, and by means of a delicate grey wash for the shadowed areas, with the light coming from the upper left-hand part of the composition. Beautiful anatomical study of the figure, whose suffering is enhanced by the tension and sinuous movement of the body.
Spanish or Italian work from the 17th century.
In an ebonised wood frame
Good condition, visible oxydation stains.
