A Louis XV commode stamped Christophe Wolff

A Louis XV commode ormolu-mounted Kingwood, tulipwood and marquetry stamped by Christophe Wolff, mid 18th century.
Louis XV period chest of drawers with curved front and sides with pinched uprights, it opens with two long drawers with concealed support rails, inlaid with Kingwood butterfly wings in a cartouche with Tulipwood buttress delimited by boxwood fillets, on a frame of oak and resinous with an oak base. A beautiful ornamentation of chased and gilded bronze, such as falls in leafy clasps, rocaille sabots, entries of lock and keys completes its decoration. The whole is topped with a marble leaf in Saint Martin pulling on the Byzantine. The stamped C Wolff is struck on the left front jamb, trace of swearing on the right jamb.
Christophe Wolff, received master on December 10, 1755.
Marble dimensions : Height 869.5cm - Width 91cm - Depth 47.2cm.
The Saint Martin marble is of light gray color almost pale with small nuances of blackish Byzantine, with polyp drawings. Its exploitation began around 1732/1735 until 1838; it was used exclusively in the 18th century.
WOLFF (Christophe), native of Germany, born in 1720, died in Paris on August 6, 1795. At first a simple worker, then a free craftsman, he became master on December 10, 1755. After residing on rue de Charenton for about twenty years, he moved his workshop to rue Neuve-Saint-Denis, where he practiced successfully until the Revolution. His mark C. WOLFF is found on very good works, often covered with picturesque marquetry. He is represented in the Louvre Museum, in the Camondo legacy, by a lady's desk, decorated with wood and ivory inlays, with drawings of flowers, attributes and landscapes; the body of the piece of furniture contains a step which rises behind the shelf and forms a secretary in happiness-of-day.
We know a curious table by Christophe Wolff, with three tops mounted on hinges serving alternately as a desk, hot water bottle table, chessboard and tric-trac. The Musée des Arts Décoratifs shows a chest of drawers decorated with Chinese subjects. Other beautiful works of the same author have been reproduced in the catalogs of the T.Broët and Alfred Bergaud collections.
Dimensions in marble : Height 869.5cm - Width 91cm - Depth 47.2cm.
