18th Furniture, country french furniture
Exceptional Rennes Regence wedding cabinet or Armoire in cherry wood, with double arched cornice, signed Julien Dondel, dated 1785. Work from the Rennes region of the second half of the 18th century.
This cabinet belongs to the golden age of furniture in the Pays de Rennes, a short flourishing period of transition between Louis XIV furniture and Louis XV furniture which goes from the end of the 18th century to the very first years of the 19th century, and during which the hieratic cabinets with triple panels and Louis XIV type straight legs will see their uprights rounded off and their feet curved while the first double-panel cabinets (still entirely carved) adorned with Louis XV moldings will make their appearance, all adorned with 'a luxuriant ornamentation specific to the "à la Bérain" repertoire.
