History :
Louis Alexandre Marie Nattero was born on October 16, 1870 in Marseille.
His parents separated in 1872 and in 1880 Louis was placed in an orphanage.
Passionate about drawing, he produced his first works at the age of 11: portraits that he managed to sell in order to survive.
After an unhappy childhood, he turned to painting and followed in his father's footsteps and painted all his life.
Between 1891 and 1904, the painter lived in Toulon with his family.
From 1896 to 1897, he attended the National Superior School of Fine Arts in Paris, where he was a student of Leon Bonnat.
He then returned to Toulon, then settled permanently in Marseille, his native city.
His talent was quickly recognized and his paintings were very successful from 1905.
He participated in most of the exhibitions in the region.
In 1914, the war broke out and three of his sons went to the front.
His paintings at that time were no longer sold. A deep despair overcame him and he put an end to his life on November 10th 1915.
In 2004, the museum of old Toulon, organizes a very beautiful exhibition.
