Louis XVI portico clock with Wedgwood plates

Large Louis XVI period portico clock in white marble, black marble, gilt bronze and blue and white porcelain medallions of Wedgwood style. Late 18th century, Circa: 1790.

On a large white marble terrace enriched with chased and gilt bronze facings, the uprights decorated with musical instruments and gilt bronze scrolls at the base rest on a black marble pedestal and are topped by gilt bronze antique lyres. Our clock differs from common models by the use of polychrome cookie plates in the Wedgewood style presenting antique scenes in white on a blue background. The large white enamel dial with 3 hands (indicating the time and the date - days of the month) is topped by an antique marble and gilt bronze vase.

Wedewood, a British earthenware and porcelain manufacturer, was founded in 1759 by Josiah Wedgwood and his son Thomas. The factory specialized in the creation of earthenware in unglazed jaspered paste tinted, most often of pale blue, but also darker blue, pink or green, covered with application in bas-reliefs of white earthenware. These cameo style decorations are inspired by the taste of the antique which results from the Greek and Roman archaeological discoveries. Of very beautiful quality, these pieces are often compared to porcelain by collectors. It was one of the largest producers of British pottery and had worldwide success in the neoclassical period, exporting throughout Europe to Russia and the Americas. The great cabinetmakers like Weisweiler and the Mercier merchants integrated them into their furniture, clocks and objets d'art richly mounted with chased and gilded bronze frames.

Our clock is a beautiful amateur model, with all the refinements sought by collectors. It is a piece of salon, of great size and spectacular quality.

In very good general condition, beautiful gilding perfectly preserved, no accidents neither to the marbles, nor to the cookies. Original chased hands and intact, as well as the curved glass protecting the dial. Small missing gilded bronze beads on the left side. The wire movement in perfect condition and functional, revised by our watchmaker.
