17th & 18th centuries Furniture and Statuary
Madonna and Child in walnut carved in the round from the late Italian Renaissance period.
Mary, represented standing, is dressed in a dress with parallel pleats as well as a loose coat held by her left hand to fall in large deep pleats on the front.
Her round face, with a fine nose and small lips, is topped with long wavy hair covered with a veil.
The child Jesus is depicted naked, supported as if balanced on Mary's left arm.
His arms reach forward in an opening motion, his right hand blessing as he carries the globe in his left hand.
Her chubby face, with fine and youthful features, is surrounded by charming little curls.
This Virgin and Child, sculpted at the end of the 16th century, is composed in a delicate and graceful style from which a gentle expression of tenderness emanates.
