17th & 18th centuries Furniture and Statuary
Very pretty Virgin and Child in limewood carved in the round from the 16th century.
Mary, represented standing in a slightly swaying attitude, carries the Child Jesus on her left arm. She is wearing a long dress belted at the waist and gracefully tied at the sleeves. Her smiling face is styled with beautiful wavy hair that falls freely over her shoulders and down to her back.
The child raises his right hand in blessing as he supports the globe with his left hand. Her chubby face is surrounded by charming little curls.
A benevolent softness emanates from this charming sculpted group.
We will also notice the care taken in the treatment of the drapery of the Virgin's dress falling in large folds broken on the front.
