Dutch or Flemish school of the 16th century, the Flight to Egypt. Oil on panel in a blackened wooden frame.
The scene represents the Holy Family, the Virgin Mary sitting on the donkey giving the breast to the Child Jesus, guided by Saint Joseph who makes them cross the Nile on a small wooden bridge. In the background of the painting on the right, we can see the farmers and the countryside of the Holy Land, which they left to escape Herod's persecutions. In the upper left corner we can see a palm tree representing the East as it was imagined in 16th century Europe.
Beautiful painting finely executed between 450 and 500 years ago. It is clear and colorful. Panel in good condition, cleaned and restored, panel split with an old 18th century repair on the back.
