17th & 18th centuries Furniture and Statuary
Very pretty Pietà in polychrome limestone carved around 1500.
The virgin, slightly leaning over her son, is dressed in a red dress as well as an ample coat falling in deep and eventful pleats on the front and on the sides.
The eyes of the Virgin are full of sweetness and serenity
Christ, crowned with thorns, hairy, bearded and with closed eyes, expresses total and confident abandonment in the arms of Mary.
His body, very fluid, simply dressed in perizonium, is represented diagonally on the knees of hisMother with the line of his body which adapts to the body of the Virgin. His legs hang down at a right angle, while his right arm falls naturally to the ground echoing Marie's left hand who seems to be mobilizing all her strength to hold back her son.
The emotion and serenity that emanate from this sculpture testify to a beautifully crafted work of art: the richness of the details, the quality of the movement, the expression of the faces allow us to date it to the 1500s.
