St. Louis Thistle Gold Square Carafe & 6 St. Louis Thistle Gold Glass! Handmade in France.
These ornately decorated pieces come from Saint-Louis, the oldest crystal factory in France (since 1586) and a royal glass factory since 1767.
They are mouth blown and hand carved. The gold (24 kt) is applied by hand after the crystal has been etched in relief. It is then relit so that the gold becomes part of the glass - it will not wear off.
The Thistle was the original inspiration behind this service when it was created for the Nancy exhibition in 1908 at the height of the Art Nouveau movement. Later, 'Entente cordiale oblige', Chardon ('Thistle') was Anglicised, Thistle became a dazzling feature on the biggest tables.
