Provencal lacquered wedding cabinet - Nîmes 18th century

Louis XV wedding armoire in molded, carved and lacquered walnut. Nîmes - Provence - Eighteenth century.

Large armoire from Nîmes with an arched cornice, three mixed panels (molded with a flat band) and a low openwork crosspiece, richly carved with flowering stems, bases, pierced fleurons, baskets, openwork lyre...
Model of good proportions, well-shod, of an excellent carpentry and a beautiful quality of sculpture. Imposing and luxurious cabinet, lacquered grey-blue rechampi cream, interior lacquered green "olive leaf" or green Uzes.

Note that if the furniture was later lacquered it is by choice and not to hide imperfections such as grooves or waxing, similarly this cabinet is well in walnut and not in alder for example. It is therefore presented in its integrity and almost without restoration. It should be noted that the two upper shelves are added while the cabinet has kept its old shelf with three drawers in the lower part.
The quality of the metal fittings is noteworthy: long iron lock entrances and above all long laced plugs (eight sides for a thickness of 25 mm) with three fixing points, of a very substantial weight (so much so that two people are required to lift each of the doors), a beautiful espagnolette on the left leaf and a large lock (period but added) on the right.

The large bouquet in the pediment, the central panel in medallion and the lower crosspiece carved with a lyre are characteristic of the beautiful Nîmes furniture.
