Beautiful Sainte Catherine in carved stone, late 15th - early 16th century.
The Saint is dressed in a rich dress with a belt at the waist. She is also wearing a crown to recall her noble origins.
The face of the Saint is smiling. She has a beautiful wavy hair that falls down to her chest.
She holds a sword in her right hand and we see at her feet the wheel, the attribute of her martyrdom.
Good condition
Auvergne, volcanic stone
Period early sixteenth
Historical annecdote:
The devotion to Saint Catherine was one of the most widespread in Europe. Many corporations have placed themselves under his patronage, in particular those which used wheels (carters, rope makers, woolen spinners ...) and those which called on intellectual knowledge (orators, philosophers, theologians ...)
St Catharine's College at Cambridge University still bears his name to this day and the wheel can be found in his crest.
