Baschelet Q. Granger C.-M., Paris 1809-1819, two vermeil ewers

Beautiful set of two ovoid ewers in finely chiseled gilded silver.
The large ewer, from the goldsmith Quentin BASCHELET, is decorated with friezes of rais-de-cœur and friezes of pearls. The smallest, from goldsmith Charles-Michel GRANGER, has a decoration of water-leaf friezes and pearl friezes.
The two handles are in ebony.

Marks
• French "Coq 1er titre" (for solid silver 950/1000 in Paris between 1809 and 1819).
• "Grosse Garantie" for Paris.
• Master goldsmiths.

Dimensions
• H. 20.5 - L. 12 - D. 9 cm.
• H. 16.5 - L. 10.5 - D. 7 cm.

Gross weight, 251 and 181 gr., 433 gr. in all (0,95 pounds).

These ewers are from two different silversmiths and do not constitute a set in the strict sense of the term. However, they have many similarities that can claim the rare quality of a homogeneous whole.
Due to these differences, however, it is possible to acquire one of these two pieces separately from the other.

Quentin BASCHELET, successor of HUGUET, is a Parisian goldsmith living at 13, cour de Harlay. His mark is registered in 1815. We do not know the end of his activity, but pieces by BASCHELET are found after 1838.
Its warranty number is 1748.
Quentin Baschelet is a renowned goldsmith. He notably carries out part of the BRANICKI service, for General-Count François-Xavier BRANICKI and his wife [1], alongside prestigious goldsmiths such as ODIOT or François-Dominique NAUDIN. Exhibited at the Exposition des Produits de l'Industrie Française in 1819 at the LOUVRE, the service was probably transferred to the Wilanowo Palace after the death of the Countess in 1838. A few pieces are still there but the majority were sold by the government Russian, part of which is in the RIJKSMUSEUM in Amsterdam.

Charles-Michel GRANGER is a Parisian silversmith at 16, rue Harlay du Palais in 1811, then 34 quai des Orfèvres from 1814. He had his punch stamped in 1810.
Its warranty number is 1268.

[1] François-Xavier BRANICKI (1731-1819) and Alexandra Vasilievna von ENGELHARDT (1754-1838), niece of prince POTEMKINE, married in 1781. Franciszek Ksawery BRANICKI is a Polish aristocrat, starost of Halicz and grand-hetman of the Crown. Very close to King STANISLAS II, he will however be one of the main leaders of the Confederation of Targowica. The BRANICKI's possessions will be considerable, because of the property received by François-Xavier, but also of the immense fortune brought in dowry by his wife, of which certain theories advance that she would be the illegitimate daughter of CATHERINE II and of prince POTEMKINE.
