Superb Crystal Decanter with Cut Glass and Solid Silver Mounting, Hallmarked by the John GRINSELL & Sons Silversmithing House.
The solid silver mount consists of a carefully fitted neck and spout, a handle, and a hinged lid surmounted by a spherical finial. It is adorned with a finely engraved monogram in Gothic letters, probably BK. The lid reveals the removable ice compartment inside, equipped with a handle and cover, allowing drinks to be chilled without dilution, all in crystal with a fully silver mounting.
Each piece of this decanter is hallmarked, including the lids, attesting to the authenticity and quality of the item.
The robust crystal body features deep, hand-cut decoration with a diamond point pattern, the faceted cutting of which creates multiple light reflections, showcasing the craftsmanship of late 19th-century glassmakers. The base is decorated with a star-shaped cut pattern.

GRINSELL & Sons
Birmingham, London, Glasgow (active from 1861 to 1992)
Founded at the end of 1861, the house John Grinsell & Sons emerged after the dissolution of the partnership Grinsell & Bourne in 1874. Specializing in fine silversmithing, it quickly gained prestige for the quality and originality of its creations. The house was particularly renowned for its expertise in producing mounted pieces, where precious materials such as crystal, glass, ivory, or gemstones were combined with solid silver. This mastery of mounting allowed the creation of both refined and functional objects, from tableware to decorative items.
In addition to mounted pieces, the house was also famous for its silver tableware, such as goblets, boxes, candelabras, and household accessories, which combined elegance, precision, and innovation. Every piece produced by John Grinsell & Sons was a true work of art, created with a constant concern for perfection and aesthetics.
In 1905, the company was incorporated as John Grinsell & Sons Ltd. After its acquisition by Barker Ellis & Co. Ltd in 1992, the company ceased operations, but its legacy endures through pieces that are still highly sought after by collectors and preserved in prestigious collections. Examples of this silversmith's work can be found in the collections of the National Trust in England.
