17th & 18th centuries Furniture and Statuary
Very nice carved panel in polychromed and gilded wood representing the Virgin surrounded by Saint John and Mary Magdalene.
Marie stands in the center of the composition, her hands clasped above her son's body.
She is wearing a long, pleated coat that falls to her feet. She also wears the wimple and the veil.
Her face expresses all her maternal tenderness.
On her left, we recognize Mary Magdalene, who is holding the ointment jar (with which she washed Christ's feet) in her hands.
She has long, wavy hair, finely sculpted.
Saint John stands behind the right shoulder of the Virgin, holding the holy book.
Christ is dressed in his perizonium and wearing the crown of thorns. He is resting on his mother's lap.
A beautiful emotion emerges from this statuary group sculpted at the beginning of the 16th century.
