18th century French School, large portrait of an officer in cuirass with a large black bow tie, wearing a powdered wig. The black scarf and the cross indicate that he is also knight of the order of Malta. Our oil on canvas is presented in a carved and gilt wood 18th century frame. (early Louis XV period). signed and dated on the back "Baziray Pinxit 1738".
we know a few about Mathurin says Charles BAZIRAY (ca 1685 - 1755). He is alleged pupil of Largillière and many works of him representing the high nobility of the West of France are known. (Nantes, Rennes, Fougères and Saint Malo). Our beautiful officer is certainly high birth, but unfortunately not identified to date.
The painting is in excellent condition, no repaints on the face, a few restorations to the black background at the edge of the frame. Superb carved and gilded wood frame (Regence-Louis XV period), gilding with gold leaf cleaned by our gilder.
