The story is taken from the Old Testament. During a campaign wreaked havoc in the Middle East, Holofernes besieges Bethulie, a Jewish city. Judith, a young widow takes advantage of her intelligence and beauty to charm the general. With her servant, they are invited to a big banquet. In the night, Judith will wait until Holofernes is unable to defend himself in order to decapitate him.
The artistic representations of this scene, as on our tapestry, highlight the dangerousness of the sensual charm of the woman to whom men succumb too easily, like Holofernes.
