Strasbourg gilded silver circumcision beaker, 18th century

A Strasbourg gilded silver beaker, between 1749 and 1751, by the silversmith Jean-Louis III Imlin. The cup with a small moulding is put on a base with gadroons frieze. This sober « timbale » is interesting with its engraved inscriptions. On the first side, « J.S.de Bausson : M.B », dating from the creation of the piece, and on the other side, a Hebraic characters inscription. This one, the most important tells us that this object was used as a circumcision beaker by a jewish community. It was originally used as a pair : one for the benediction and one for the benediction.
The rather clumsy engraving is explained by the fact that it was made by a non-jewish person.
Very rare, only one other Strasbourg contemporary exemple with ewer is identified in the collections of the Museum of Jewish Art and History in Paris.
