A Russian chandelier with a startling design. A bowl with openwork appliques ends in a pine-cone at the bottom. Six long and six shorter strips bend upwards. The longer strips end in candle-holders that are carried by a female head in an Egyptian inspired style. The strips are embellished with openwork motives and male masks in ‘Gout Étrusque”. The shorter strips end in suspension eyes from which the chandelier is hanging from chains with diamond-shaped links. The longer arms of the chandelier are connected with an openwork rim. Crystal shapes hang from the rim to the base as garlands.
The quality of the ormolu bronze is indicative of the Russian origin. Another indicator is the eclectic use of styles in the design.
