This bust standing on marble base depicts the philosopher Seneca.
Made after original on kept in Naples Museum, originated from Papyrus Villa at Herculanum. This villa belonged to Pison, father-in-law of Cesar, and was buried by the Vesuve eruption in 79 and discovered during excavation ordered by Charles de Bourbon in 1750.
Fine qualité of cast and chasing. Eyes inlaid.
