The Louis XVI style, popular from 1774 to 1792, is distinguished by its return to classical forms and symmetry. These candlesticks are a fine example, blending tradition with timeless elegance.
Three female figures, representing vestal virgins, form the body of the candlestick. Their back-to-back arrangement creates visual harmony.
The circular base, supported by three feet, is adorned with finely chiseled classical entrelacs vegetal motifs.
A circular binet, decorated with natural motifs, tops the figures' heads and holds the candle.
Inspired by the works of Robert-Joseph Auguste, an 18th-century master goldsmith, these candlesticks recall creations made for King Gustav III of Sweden, now exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of New York.
