Masereel distinguished himself during the First World War with pacifist publications, which were also honoured with exhibitions in the post-war period. In 1922 he settled in Paris and turned increasingly to painting. Before the Masereels fled Paris in 1940, Masereel liked to capture the essence of people with their fears and strong feelings, integrated into the Parisian street scene. In this work, he contrasted an introverted person, obviously marked by strong inner conflicts, with a Parisian shop window façade with an overpowering hand as an advertising icon, perhaps for a glove shop.
We would like to thank Mr Peter Riede, Frans Masereel Foundation, for his kind advice and confirmation by telephone.
