Walnut apothecary case, France 18th century

FRANCE

Walnut travel apothecary case with glass and pewter bottles.
18th century

It contains the original packaging "Le vrai sel Polychreste de monsieur Seignette de La Rochelle". Pierre Seignette 1660-1719, pharmacist and member of the medical college of La Rochelle, is known for the discovery of ‘tartrate of potash and soda’ which he exploited under the name of ‘Sel Polychreste’.
This walnut travelling pharmacy was used by itinerant apothecaries in the 18th century to carry remedies, ointments and elixirs. Its blown-glass and pewter bottles are carefully arranged to ensure that they are preserved during travel. A testament to the medical practices of yesteryear, this functional object also reflects the craftsmanship and status of its owner.
