An Ittobori Yew Wood Netsuke of a Crouching Frog by Asai Kazuyuki (d. 1865)

This finely carved netsuke depicts a crouching frog, expertly sculpted from ichii (yew) wood in the ittobori (single-cut) technique. The natural two-toned grain of the wood is skillfully incorporated into the design, enhancing the character of the piece. The eyes, inlaid with dark wood, lend the frog a particularly charming and expressive appearance.

Signed ‘Kazuyuki ??’ on the base, behind the himotoshi, this work showcases the craftsmanship of Asai Kazuyuki, a renowned netsuke carver of Takayama in the Hida Province.

In very good condition, with typical signs of wear and age, including minor nicks and surface scratches, which add to its authenticity and character.
