Fine silver mounted natural hematite amulet Germany 17th century

A fine silver mounted natural hematite amulet.

German, 17th century.

The amulet measures 10.3cm long excluding loose bail.

The engraved silver dogs tooth mount bears the owners initials ‘E.W’.

In the 17th century and earlier, hematite was believed to have powerful magical and medicinal properties, often linked to protection, healing, and divination. Due to its blood-red powder when ground, it was associated with vitality and the human circulatory system. Physicians used it to stop bleeding, strengthen the blood, and treat ailments like anemia. Soldiers carried hematite amulets, believing it would make them invincible and prevent wounds from bleeding.

Hematite was also a protective stone, thought to ward off evil spirits, curses, and witchcraft. It was worn as a talisman for defense against negative energies. In warfare, some believed that rubbing hematite on weapons would increase their strength and power.

In divination and mysticism, hematite’s reflective surface was used for scrying, revealing visions or messages from the spirit world. Scholars and magicians valued it for enhancing mental clarity and wisdom. The stone was also connected to Mars, the god of war, reinforcing its association with strength and battle.

Additionally, hematite had a link to the afterlife, often placed in graves to protect the deceased and guide them safely to the underworld. Across cultures, it remained a stone of power, protection, and transformation.
