Architectural element representing a lion - Italy 17th century

This sculpted white marble architectural element, dating from the 17th century and of Italian origin, features a refined décor emblematic of Baroque ornamentation.
The sculpted lion is carved from white marble, a noble material highly prized in Italy. The overall effect is one of sculptural virtuosity, with finely worked details and a symmetrical composition.
A majestic lion, the central and symbolic element, is sculpted in high relief. Its half-open mouth reveals menacing fangs, and it holds a metal ring between its jaws, reminiscent of traditional door knockers. Its intense, piercing expression lends a solemn, powerful character to the whole. On either side of the lion, scrolled sculpted elements and volutes accentuate the dynamic movement of the relief.
Directly below, a large cartouche adorned with plant motifs occupies the central part of the console. This cartouche is encircled by a wide belt carved in trompe-l'oeil style, with adjustment holes and a finely detailed buckle, a relatively rare and surprising motif in architectural ornamentation of this period.
The lion's paws, powerful and expressive, frame the lower section, reinforcing the impression of strength and dominance. At the base, a carved floral rosette adds an elegant and balanced decorative touch.
This architectural element was probably an integral part of a prestigious building, or was used to support a table, cornice or architectural frame, as can be seen from the two uncarved back panels.
The use of the lion, a symbol of strength, protection and prestige, was common in Baroque iconography, particularly in Italy, where it often adorned the entrances and façades of important buildings. This carved lion comes from the Giovanni Pratesi Collection, ‘the Florentine eye’, an exceptional antique dealer in Florence over the last few decades. Belonging to a collection of this size makes the piece all the more interesting and precious.
The sculptural aspect and richness of detail demonstrate the excellence of Italian craftsmen in the 17th century, when Baroque art reached its apogee with theatricality, movement and contrasting forms.
