This particular form of lekythos is distinguished by its squat shape and short neck. Typical of the Archaic period, it is decorated using the black figure technique and can be dated to the third quarter of the 6th century.
The body is adorned with a winged figure, probably Niké or Iris in the attitude of a kneeling race, between two spectators. The figure's head is turned backwards. The shoulder shows a runner between two standing judges draped in a himation. A close parallel to our lekythos is preserved in the Sofia National Museum (Inv. 6285).
