19th & 20th century decorative arts.
Ivory lacquered carved wood table, protective glass top.
The octagonal top with bevelled corners is protected by a glass plate. It rests on four legs joined at mid-height by an intermediate shelf bordered by columns on three sides, providing storage space. The ends of the base end in an inflection. The impression of lightness is accentuated by the sculpture: undulating contours of the columns, scales along the legs, half-angular half-rounded spiral at their end.
Eliel Saarinen, father of Eero Saarinen, architect of the Finnish Pavilion at the 1900 World's Fair, of Helsinki Central Station in 1904, is a Finnish architect who continued his career in the United States from 1923. Ray & Charles Eames were his students at the Cranbrook Kingswood School, the equivalent of the Bauhaus in the United States. Its importance in the history of 20th century decorative arts led the Musée d'Orsay to reference it.
