This type of skyphos, decorated on both sides with an owl between two olive branches, appeared in Athens at the beginning of the 5th century BC. Our example, made in Apulia, differs from its Attic precursors in having two horizontal handles, a less curved wall and the absence of a pointed circle under the foot. The color of the clay, less orange than in Athens, is a further argument for locating the production of this vase in Southern Italy.
